Looking back at Ramé
What do you remember about the sound of the record?
“It was one of my cleanest albums vocally. We didn’t use that many effects on the lead vocals. A lot of what you hear is me using different parts and possibilities of my own voice. The background vocals were different: those had more echo and other elements because we wanted them to create another atmosphere around the main voice.”
What does the title Ramé mean to you now?
“A lot of it is about accepting what happens to us, transforming it into a song and singing it. I grew up with this idea that when something isn’t your problem, you don’t involve yourself in it, and you don’t drag other people into it either. Sometimes I also made the mistake of communicating too little about what was actually happening. Ramé comes from that tension: something happens, you live it, you transform it, and eventually it becomes music.”
Was the collaborative side of the album easy?
“Not always. I loved working with some people, but it was also probably the album where collaborations taught me the most. Different personalities, expectations and even political disagreements could collide. At times I felt uncomfortable with how much attention was placed on reproductions and numbers. My feeling was simple: if my mother is the only person playing the song, then she’ll play it. You work for what you want, even when the audience is still small.”
What did that teach you?
“Respect your collaborators. Always. Respect the person who invites you and the person who trusts you enough to participate. A collaboration isn’t only about who gets more streams. Everybody involved is trying to build something, and everybody deserves that respect.”
And performing during that period?
“While I was recording the album, I performed at Fausto Discoteque in an edition of El Juego de la Botota with David Becerra and Camila Lippi. They were very sweet. We performed around the period of the Love Always Wins singles, with singing, dancing and a much more produced presentation. Looking back, some of that production makes me cringe a little — but that’s part of it. Sometimes you look back and think, ‘God, that’s embarrassing,’ but at least there was an attempt. If you don’t produce anything at all, there isn’t even an attempt to look back on.”
