TRACK 01 · CAUQUENES

GLOOM

GLOOM was made in Cauquenes after my relationship with Fuzz had ended. I was back in my city, trying to create through a period that was already emotionally difficult. At home, my relationship with my mother was tense, and I was going through something serious that I did not always feel understood or supported through.

The song also came from a local collaboration that I later chose not to carry forward as part of this story. After I moved to Canada, we disagreed about money and about how much work had actually been completed. From my perspective, what was later described as an almost-finished album had never become an album: there had been an idea for one, while only a handful of songs had actually been worked on. When an additional amount was requested, I asked my mother to pay it and closed that chapter.

What stayed with me was not really the money. It was discovering that two people could remember the same collaboration completely differently. I had believed there was friendship inside the work. Distance made me reconsider that assumption.

“Sometimes leaving a place does not only change where you live. It changes what you discover about the relationships you left behind.”
P.S. · WHY I LET IT OUT

I uploaded the song partly because I wanted to give that local collaborator something: the chance to see that work made in our city could be heard in other countries. Left entirely to me, the recording probably would never have seen the light. I knew it sounded rough. Not every ear is made for every genre, or for making every idea translate into something sonically rich. But that did not matter enough to erase the gesture.

I do not mind letting one extra song make an album a little messier if, by being there, it can give somebody the outside confirmation they need to keep going. I think of Pablo, with whom I made Weird in Cauquenes; In the River came from that world too. I think of La Red Géminis, where I recorded the album 10 de Noviembre. These places and people belong to the imperfect geography of learning how to make music.

Maybe that is why I keep these recordings. I feel like a mother drinking from the crooked cup her child made at school. It may not be the finest cup in the house. You use it because you know who made it, what it meant, and where it came from.

THE MAKING OF ATYPICAL HOME · THE CABIN SESSIONS

Four boys went to the beach
to make four albums.

SEVEN HEAVENS

Nació rodeada de referencias pop: Selena Gomez, Rihanna y BLACKPINK. Atypical Home nunca escondió que yo crecí escuchando a otras personas. Las referencias son parte de su memoria.

BENJAMÍN MALDONADO · EXCHANGE

You help me with mine. I help you with yours.

IN MEMORY

DEAR TEACHER · FOR THE PERSON WHO BELIEVED ME

Hortensia Agurto †

BOYS · 1997 · HOME

Pop, birthdays, and a song I almost felt I was making in secret.

HOME · FOR JULIO

ORIGIN STORY · CHRISTMAS 2021
Luciana: 12 July · Ned: 10 July · wedding: 11 July — three consecutive July dates. Luciana was born on 12 July 1991 in Cauquenes.

The Christmas when Luciana Echeverría said yes.

RELEASE & LEGACY
14 · 02 · 2022

A record released on Valentine’s Day.

Atypical Home became a defining release in the story of Ned Quintana: the album that consolidated the project and brought together its pop language, collaborators, memories and personal mythology in one place. Across its releases, the record has surpassed 1.1 million streams.

A MILESTONE · MEXICO

LISA

400,000+ Spotify streams

Several songs from Atypical Home crossed 100,000 streams on Spotify, but one song found a particularly special life in Mexico. LISA broke through there, eventually passing 400,000 Spotify streams. It became one of the defining milestones of the album — and a personal milestone for me as an artist.

Part of that story belongs to Zax*Y, a Mexican listener who uploaded LISA to his YouTube channel, as he also did with Seven Heavens and other songs. Thank you, Zax*Y. And thank you to everyone in Mexico who listened, shared the music, returned to it, or made it part of their own life.

Joshua is part of that history too. He has been there since 2017 — from when I started, to when I regretted starting, to when I decided to begin again. We even have Día de Julio together. Careers are usually told through releases and numbers, but mine is also measured by the people who stayed long enough to see me change.

“I love everyone who has ever listened to me. You gave me the joy of being able to feel that I am a singer — and not everyone gets to experience that.”
THE ART BEHIND THE WORLD

Maca.

@PUPYLAPLANTITA · INSTAGRAM

Or, as I know her, Pupy La Plantita. Maca was the person who helped me give an image to the books, the covers and much of the visual world I was building around Atypical Home. We met through social media. We literally did not know each other in person, and somehow we became the best of friends.

I still adore her and remember her deeply as someone who taught me a great deal and showed me something about myself that I love. Some people are mirrors that do not break your reflection; they make you feel good about what you see in it. Maca was one of those people for me.

We talked constantly. At the time, every peso mattered. I worked and saved peso after peso so I could pay her for the artwork. A cover could cost around CLP $50,000 — an amount that may sound small elsewhere, but for me in Chile it represented real work. Sometimes an entire security shift would only get me halfway there. My monthly pay was not built for expenses like these, but supporting an artist properly mattered to me.

We managed to make four of the twelve covers I had imagined for the record. I wanted her to make every one of them, even if it took a long time, but eventually I had to accept that I could not afford to finish the full set. Maca also created an early cover for 526. That project later changed its visual language completely, but her work belongs to that earlier chapter of its history.

“Artists should support artists. If someone has an extraordinary talent and their work is wonderful, I would rather pay them and make sure that work feels valued.”

If I had to recommend someone for design, I would recommend Macarena. She does not simply make an image; she can make a world feel real. Her work was worth every peso.

The mind behind the imagination
Behind Atypical Home
THE PERSON BEHIND THE WORLD

The Mind Behind
the Imagination.

Behind the songs, characters, memories and stories of Atypical Home was a mind constantly turning lived moments into another world. Music became narrative; narrative became characters; characters became books. The album was never only a collection of songs — it was one of the places where imagination learned how to become an archive.
